To get the most benefit from sharing your home and living with a cat, or cats, it is essential to build a bond between you and your animals based on total trust.

Your cats rely on you for everything: food, water, bedding, toilet facilities, warm dry, and safe accommodation, and your love and affection.  It’s easy for them to take this for granted; that you’ll always provide according to their requirements and that they’re not your cat, you’re their ‘person’, or butler, slave, or Goffer!

The trick is, not to take your cat for granted, and not to let him or her do the same.

Every time I walk into the room where Dino is sitting or sleeping, I say, ‘Hello Dino’ and give him a gentle stroke or tickle.  I call him by name all the time and talk to him in a gentle soft voice.

Whenever he comes near, I greet him and call him up onto the sofa for a chat.

If I’m preparing meat or fish for dinner, I’ll call him over and offer him a tasty treat.

When I see him looking outside, I know he wants to go out, and so I let him.

When he looks at me, then at his dish and back again, I know he wants something to eat, and he gets it.

We’ve established a routine for both breakfast and bedtime.  Breakfast follows a brief walk in the garden, then a quick fuss and tickle before morning knap.

Bedtime is announced with ‘Up-Up!’ and we head upstairs, after a late-night snack of course.

After dinner, I pull up a chair for Dino to join us at the table for after-dinner conversation.  He never jumps up on the table because he knows we are, or have been, eating.

The benefits of having a cat with whom you have total trust come pleasantly when you least expect it.  After a hard day’s work when I collapse into a comfy chair in front of the TV, Dino will appear from nowhere and jump up onto the arm and say ‘hello!’, and it’s such a pleasure to greet my feline friend.

When your cats want to be with you, and they come to you not for food, but just for simple, mutual affection, you know you have total trust, and being a cat’s person is so worthwhile!

Enjoy your CatZ!

Now that we’ve taken care of all their essential needs, like food, water, safe place to hang out, our cats have more time on their paws than they know what to do with.  After waking at daybreak, jumping through the cat flap for a sniff-of-the-air, quick wander, pee and a pooh, it’ll be time for breakfast, after which, there’s not much left to do that can’t wait while he or she takes a knap!

Thus begins the search for a comfy spot.  The sofa or an armchair are good options; your bed is always good, somewhere near a radiator is choice in winter, or if feeling a little nervous, under anyone’s bed will do.

Of course, if you’ve left your little black dress on the bed, or your dinner jacket on the sofa, these will make extra special places to doze away the morning.

So to avoid cat hair everywhere, providing your cat with a comfy basket all of their own could save you hours of vacuuming and brushing!

I’ve lost count of the baskets I’ve bought my cats over the years.  From wicker baskets, soft purpose-made top of the range delux offerings most cat owners would walk through hail and snow to get their hands on, all for the feline recipient to take one sniff and say ‘not likely – you sleep in it if it’s so comfy!’

Next thing you know, they’re quite happy for one quick sleep in a cardboard box from Amazon!   Only once though!  I’ve left old boxes lying around the house for weeks trying to tempt my feline friend to pleasant slumbers, all to no avail.

I have sussed out that cats generally don’t like square boxes much. A round basket is preferred.  I’m not convinced about nylon or polyester baskets either, as I think the static electricity they can generate might interfere with their fur.

Check out the baskets in the link below and let us know what your CatZ prefer.

If you don’t have your new young female kitten spayed, sure enough she’ll be in the family way by the time she’s six months old.  Some hansom young Tom-cat will sniff her out and have his way with her.  You’ll notice her belly swelling after a couple of weeks, and after a total of 65 days, or thereabouts, she’ll present you with her new family.

This will present you with a few challenges.

Hopefully, you will have provided her with a safe place to have her kittens.  A nice soft basket placed out of the way so she won’t be disturbed is essential.  Preferably one with a cover so she has a nice den all to herself.

She will want plenty to eat and drink as she nurses her kittens, so make sure there’s plenty of food and water close by.  She might even appreciate some milk or cream, as it’s rich in calcium and she’ll need it while she’s feeding.

After a couple of days, your new ‘mum’ will move her kittens to an alternative den, such a under your bed or in a wardrobe.  This can be a bit disconcerting as you’ll return home from work and the kittens will be gone!  It’s an instinctive reaction to protect from predators if the kittens had been born outside in the wild.  In my experience, once you’ve found them, you can either move the basket to the new location, if that’s convenient, or simply put the kittens back and reassure mum that everything will be ok.

Beware if you have other cats in the house.  Naturally, your they will know what’s going on and will be interested. They may feel a bit put-out having new rivals entering their territory.  Check their reaction by introducing them to the new family while you stay close by, but don’t leave other cats near mum and her babies overnight, and try and keep them apart for a few days.

You might find they’ll be happy to cuddle up to the kittens while mum takes a break.

The next challenge you’ll have is finding the kittens new homes, once you’ve decided you don’t want to keep them.  If you have kids in the house, you’ll be under pressure to keep all of them! Sure, we can handle ten cats in the house!  You’ll have to present the argument as to who is going to feed them each day, who will change the litter basket, who will brush them each day?  Ok, we’ll keep one, only one!

Once you put the word out, either to neighbours, family, or on social media, you’ll have no shortage of takers.  You might need the help of the Cats Protection League who will advertise you have kittens needing a new home.  But you’ll have six to eight weeks fun while they leave the basket and explore their new world!

Watch out!  CatZ Kittens about!

When I left my parents’ house to set up a home of my own, there was something missing.  We’d had a dog as by brother and I grew up, but when he sadly passed away, our mother said ‘No more animals!’ but I knew that in my house, that would not be the case.

As a working man, it would not have been fair to keep a dog locked up on his own all day, but a cat with a cat-flap, bowl of water and some biscuits?  That would fit into my lifestyle with ease!

So Kool-puss came to live with me.  A small black and white ‘Tom’ kitten with a friendly disposition.  Kool was soon joined by Cleo-puss, a tortoise-shell ‘Queen’ who came from The Cats Protection League.  Her mother was a stray who slipped through a kindly lady’s cat-flap and promptly deposited eight kittens on her sofa!

Kool and Cleo lived together, firstly with me, then my parents, but sadly did not reach great ages.  Both had very comfortable lives, never wanting for food, love or attention.

After a few years living with me, I had to work abroad, and so Kool and Cleo went to live with my parents, my mother reluctantly agreeing to ‘mind’ them while I was away.  Upon my return a year later, my brother took me to one side and said ‘you weren’t thinking of asking for your CatZ back, were you?’

The bond of friendship between Kool and my Dad, and Cleo with my Mum, had become so strong I didn’t have the heart to ask!  My parent’s doted on them!  And so I thought it best to leave things as they were.  But it wasn’t long before another Cat strayed into my life!

I was living in a shared house and one of my housemates bought a kitten.  He was a small tabby and they gave him some silly name, but I just called him Puss-puss.  He was a happy little chap, very friendly, and as he grew he began to play outside.  Within a few weeks he’d found a friend.  Another Tabby.  She’d been spayed so obviously she was someone’s pet.  They played as kittens do; fighting and rolling around, much to the delight of everyone in the house.  A few weeks later there was a knock at the door. It was the man who’d come to read the gas meter and the first thing he said to me as I opened the door was ‘Do you know three cats have just run into your house?’  They were so fast I had hardly noticed them.  But three of them?  They’d found another friend.  This kitten was so small, she really shouldn’t have been outside.  So we had our cat, Puss-puss as everyone now called him, The ‘Other-Cat’ from down the road, and Little Puss as we nicknamed her.

Now here comes the sad bit!

One afternoon there was a knock at the door.  A neighbour came to tell me that a cat had been killed on the busy road near by and wondered if it was ours.  My heart sank!  She showed me where it lay and I could see it was ‘The Other-Cat’.  I fetched a cardboard box and put here in it, covered  her with a towel and took her home.  I then started knocking on peoples doors asking if they had a cat and eventually, a gentleman said he did have a cat but he hadn’t seen it that afternoon.  I gave him the sad news that I might have his at and invited him round to identify it.  It was his cat.  I offered him my condolences and he took her away.  So now we had two cats; Puss-puss and Little Puss.

Two weeks later, the gentleman who had retrieved his dead cat from me knocked on our door and said ‘I’m afraid I have to give you the same bad news’.  Again ,my heart sank.  It was Puss-Puss!  H’d been hit on the road in much the same place as The Other-Cat, and had been taken to a local vet whom I immediately called in the hope he was ok.  Alas, there was nothing to be done.  I was told not to come and collect him as he was a mess; just remember him as he was.

So now there was just Little Puss left.  From that point on, she moved in with us, more particularly, with me, and we were together for fourteen years!

If you have more than one cat in your house, there will be competition to be the Alpha male or Queen Cat.  Less dominate cats can feel threatened and may exhibit some worrying behaviours, like peeing on your carpet!

Other stress inducing factors may include things like fireworks and loud noises,  noisy building works, or strangers to your home.  Your cat may show signs of stress by excessive scratching, crouching low to the ground with a low tail, hiding away or sitting facing a wall.

The obvious thing to do is spend time with your cat, reassuring him or her that you are there and nothing bad is going to happen.  Play with your cat and make sure you let them get hold of the string or toy mouse, or they’ll get bored and wander off.

Make sure they have their own place to sleep.  A nice basket or soft bed, al of their own, away from other cats, preferably near you, and make sure it’sr a nice place with some food and water nearby, nice and warm lie near a radiator, and perhaps off the floor, so they feel safe.

You might try the calming plug-in odourisers which claim to calm cats, but before you spend your money, spend some time with your cat!  It’ll do you both some good!

Cat’s claws can be very damaging in your home, not to say, quite nasty if you get a swipe!  Not only can your feline-friends rip your sofas apart and claw their way up your curtains, walking across your lap with needle sharp claws can be excruciating!  Each time I offered Zero Blast-Off a tit-bit, he would try to swipe it out of my hand, usually fast enough and accurately enough to draw blood!

A little bit of rough play can also lead to some nasty scratches, especially with growing kittens who adopt a defensive position on their backs with their tummies in the air.  If you try and tickle them on the tummy, both pairs of legs, front and rear, will be brought into play and your fingers, hands and wrists will look like you’ve been dragged though a bramble patch!

Clipping your cat’s claws and providing a scratching post are the best things to begin with if you want to save your furniture and carpets.

What to Look For Under The Fur

Your cat’s fur should be soft and smooth when you stroke him or her.

Your cat’s fur should be soft and smooth when you stroke him or her.  It will feel different as they shed their old coat and begin another.  When cats ‘moult’ they drop their old all over the place.  Outdoor cats moult seasonally, indoor cats can moult all the time!

See what your best little black dress looks like once you’ve come back from a night out and given your cat a hug in moulting season!

Or try stroking your cats with wet hands!  Chances are you’ll have enough fur to make a pair of gloves!  Brush your cat daily and mind you don’t discard your dinner jacket on the sofa where your cat will think you’ve left him or her a nice bed that smells of you and they can sleep in comfort and tranquillity.  It’ll be more that just soup splashes you’ll be trying to get out of it before the next posh do you’re invited to!

When you’re stroking your cat, look out for bald patches, cuts, bites, rashes, dandruff, a waxy coat, fleas, or a nasty smelly coat.  Cats have a fine layer of fur close to the skin, called ‘the undercoat’ which helps keep them warm.

Cuts and bites are usually a sign of fighting other cats and we have another post on fighting HERE.

Bald patches can be a problem.  It could be a skin infection, a sore, dermatitis, or, believe it or not, an allergy to fleas!  There are plenty of topical remedies on the market, but until you know the underlying cause, save your money and see a Vet.

Or the problem could be stress.  Making a few changes around the home might save you a trip to the vet and may make your cats feel at home.  Check our post on CatZ Stress.
