Cats eyes should be clear and bright, but you may, from time to time, see a third eye-lid, known as the nictitating membrane, creeping across the eye from either the inner or the outer corner.  If this is clear and of a greyish pink colour, it’s probably because your Cats has a shock, or something has frightened him or her, or they’ve been fighting other Cats which have invaded their territory!  This generally settles down after a week or so.

But if the third-eyelid is red and covering the eye slightly, it probably has a bacterial infection. with chlamydial conjunctivitis, or it could be a corneal ulcer.  Either way, it’s not something you can treat at home and you’ll need a trip to the vet for some anti-biotic drops or ointment.

Watery eyes in cats can also be a problem.  Some brachycephalic breeds with the shorter bones of the face and nose, such as Persian, Himalayan, and Burmese may be more susceptible to a watery eye condition known as Epiphora, or excessive watering from the eyes.  This could be due to blocked tear ducts which can be treated by a vet, but usually once the underlying cause can be found.

The golden rule is; if your cats eyes aren’t as they should be – seek veterinary advice sooner rather than later!

If you have more than one cat in your house, there will be competition to be the Alpha male or Queen Cat.  Less dominate cats can feel threatened and may exhibit some worrying behaviours, like peeing on your carpet!

Other stress inducing factors may include things like fireworks and loud noises,  noisy building works, or strangers to your home.  Your cat may show signs of stress by excessive scratching, crouching low to the ground with a low tail, hiding away or sitting facing a wall.

The obvious thing to do is spend time with your cat, reassuring him or her that you are there and nothing bad is going to happen.  Play with your cat and make sure you let them get hold of the string or toy mouse, or they’ll get bored and wander off.

Make sure they have their own place to sleep.  A nice basket or soft bed, al of their own, away from other cats, preferably near you, and make sure it’sr a nice place with some food and water nearby, nice and warm lie near a radiator, and perhaps off the floor, so they feel safe.

You might try the calming plug-in odourisers which claim to calm cats, but before you spend your money, spend some time with your cat!  It’ll do you both some good!

If my cats get fleas, I know about it!  I’m a three-course free lunch for the little devils!  The first sign for me is I start scratching, not the cat!  Then I’ve red spots on my ankles, and if I give Dino a cuddle, I’m covered in bites!

Fortunately, my Dino never get fleas.  Mainly because he’s a lazy seventeen year puss old who sleeps most of the day and won’t venture outside unless there isn’t a cloud in the sky, not the faintest chance of rain, or another cat passing by.

In their younger days, Zero, Ziggy and Dino would spend all night in the garden and only come in for breakfast and to use the loo! (Why they didn’t go outside…?)  Inevitably, they picked up the nasty little bity animals who think they can catch a free ride into my gaff and treat it like a hotel!

The first treatment I tried was a good quality flea-combe, which I showed to the cats and gently introduced them to.  Once they were used to it, they quite enjoyed being combed, especially when they were no longer being bitten.

I kept a bowl of water nearby so I could drown the fleas as I extracted them from the fur.  A handy way to stop them making their escape and starting a family in my home!

But by far the best method I’ve found is a ‘Spot-on’ flea treatment which acts like flea birth-control.  Very soon, my cats were flea-free, and one dose lasted well over a year.  Check out the links below for some of the best flea treatments.

Cat’s claws can be very damaging in your home, not to say, quite nasty if you get a swipe!  Not only can your feline-friends rip your sofas apart and claw their way up your curtains, walking across your lap with needle sharp claws can be excruciating!  Each time I offered Zero Blast-Off a tit-bit, he would try to swipe it out of my hand, usually fast enough and accurately enough to draw blood!

A little bit of rough play can also lead to some nasty scratches, especially with growing kittens who adopt a defensive position on their backs with their tummies in the air.  If you try and tickle them on the tummy, both pairs of legs, front and rear, will be brought into play and your fingers, hands and wrists will look like you’ve been dragged though a bramble patch!

Clipping your cat’s claws and providing a scratching post are the best things to begin with if you want to save your furniture and carpets.

Clipping claws can be a bit of a performance, particularly with younger cats.  They think you’re going to chop their feet off and will need restraining.  I’ve always found it best to make it a two-man job!  However, dear old Dino, who is 17 years old now, is happy to have his claws trimmed!  Not that he offers up each paw in turn, but gently pinned between me and the sofa arm, with my arm resting on his back, I can reach out and hold the desired paw with the clippers in the other hand.  Usually, he’ll happily let me get on with it without making too much fuss, no doubt in anticipation of the impending treat once the job is complete!

As the claw grows, the outer layer will not be so sharp, but beware,  when that layer us shed, a needle-sharp claw emerges!

A good pair of clippers large enough to snip the wider part of the claw is a good investment.

Check out the links below.

The best ways of navigating this problem, in my experience, is to provide a scratching post, sprinkle it with Cat-nip, and regularly clip their claws.

I’ve made several scratching posts in the past.  A simple square of plywood nailed to a wooden post will make the basic frame.  I then use off-cuts of carpet on the base, and some rope wrapped around the post.  You can use carpet on the post if you have enough, but it really depends on what your Cats pre-furs.  The main objective is to distract him or her from destroying your sofa or ripping up your new Wilton carpet.

If you’re not ready to make your own scratching post, there are plenty of different designs to choose from.  Check out the links below.

Ear mites are the most common problem with CatZ ears.  You can easily tell if your cat has mites or ticks in the ears as you’ll probably see dark patches of ‘tic-poo’ or ‘mite-poo’ inside the ear.  Your CatZ will also be scratching their ears more than usual.  You can apply off the shelf drops to get rid of these nasty little parasites, but be warned, you won’t be popular with your CatZ after squirting liquid in their ear!

If your CatZ unlikely to sit still, offering the offending ear for a good squirt of tepid liquid, you may have to hold him or her tightly, or even hold with a towel over them, while you administer a liberal dose of the medication.  Massage the back of the ear for a few seconds and try not to let your CatZ shake their head for a minute or two. (you’ll be lucky!) .  Once you let go, a rapid head-shake will ensue, and most of the medication will spray all over you and your sofa!  (Serves you right!)

If your CatZ are in pain when you try to examin their ears and won’t let you stroke them as you’ve done so many times before, they could have some kind of foreign body lodged in the ear itself, or it could be something like an apsis or tumour.  Sed if you can see anything in the ear, but don’t poke around!  See the Vet!

A note of caution!  If your Catz are likely to go bezerk when you try to administer any type of medication, don’t try and do it on a table or kitchen worktop.  They may fall and as it’s not particularly high, they may not be able to right themselves in time and could land awkwardly on their back or hip, rather that the famed ‘landing on four feet’.  Get down low, on a sofa or on the floor so there’s nowhere to fall.  Good luck!

CatZ cough for a variety of reasons.  Very often its hairballs from excessive grooming and there are products you can give them to help ease the irritation.

It could also be a blade of grass, in which case you may need to visit the vet.   Dino was coughing a lot, so I took him to the vet and they kept him in overnight after operating to remove the offending blade.  It was three inches long and stuck too far down his throat to be able to remove it while he was conscious.  ‘Dino!  Chew your grass properly!’ I told him after the vet presented me with a £75 bill (which I thought quite reasonable).

The thing to look our for is whether the cough produces mucus, blood or stomach contents.  If you CatZ is loosing weight and is listless, it could be an infection or some form of inflammation. Then it’s time for a trip to the vet!

If there’s no other symptoms, try one of the pastes available to help with fur-balls. There’s a few on the market ranging from £5 – £20, but the only one that will be any good is the one your cats like, unless you’re going to rub it on their lips, and that won’t make you popular!

What to Look For Under The Fur

Your cat’s fur should be soft and smooth when you stroke him or her.

Your cat’s fur should be soft and smooth when you stroke him or her.  It will feel different as they shed their old coat and begin another.  When cats ‘moult’ they drop their old all over the place.  Outdoor cats moult seasonally, indoor cats can moult all the time!

See what your best little black dress looks like once you’ve come back from a night out and given your cat a hug in moulting season!

Or try stroking your cats with wet hands!  Chances are you’ll have enough fur to make a pair of gloves!  Brush your cat daily and mind you don’t discard your dinner jacket on the sofa where your cat will think you’ve left him or her a nice bed that smells of you and they can sleep in comfort and tranquillity.  It’ll be more that just soup splashes you’ll be trying to get out of it before the next posh do you’re invited to!

When you’re stroking your cat, look out for bald patches, cuts, bites, rashes, dandruff, a waxy coat, fleas, or a nasty smelly coat.  Cats have a fine layer of fur close to the skin, called ‘the undercoat’ which helps keep them warm.

Cuts and bites are usually a sign of fighting other cats and we have another post on fighting HERE.

Bald patches can be a problem.  It could be a skin infection, a sore, dermatitis, or, believe it or not, an allergy to fleas!  There are plenty of topical remedies on the market, but until you know the underlying cause, save your money and see a Vet.

Or the problem could be stress.  Making a few changes around the home might save you a trip to the vet and may make your cats feel at home.  Check our post on CatZ Stress.
